Using Your Winter Fan

On Being A Winter

Lines of Winter

Geometric designs may be used if nothing is off center. To Winter, every design must be perfectly balanced.

Prints in Fabric

Prints are indicative of the Winter who wears them. Large polka dots work well if the personality is bubbling and happy. Stripes may be worn if limited to two colors at a time, plus the background color. Flowered prints are seldom found that will give the elegance a Winter needs. Animals prints have no place in prints of Winter. Unusual abstracts work well in Winter prints.

Accessories of Winter

Accessories must be chosen carefully. Elegance should be uppermost in the mind, when choosing jewelry. Stones with icy impression are perfect choices. Diamonds, of course, are the epitome of Winter. The colors of Winter need strong, supportive shapes. Tiny black beads are not as good as large dramatic beads of that color. Ebony pieces are worn by the dramatic Winter person. Small diamonds are perfect for Winter and is the only jewelry that is needed to be worn. Matching necklace and earrings often seem "too much". Lapel pins never work well, when worn with other jewelry. Winters must make a choice to feature, not only one color at a time, but one piece of jewelry too.

Fabrics of Winter

Firmly woven fabrics that present a smooth surface, preferably silks, satins, taffeta, linen, wools, velvets and suede, add richness to cold weather apparel. Fabrics that may be worn in warmer weather are gabardine, linen, crisp cotton or knits.

How To Use Your Winter Colors

Basically, there are four types of Winter people. Because of your blending with another Season's type, you may not have the typical 'Winter look' that people expect. Your Color Me A Season Winter Fan contains all the colors you could possibly need to achieve your own special look.

Black or Silver Winters (Absolute Winter)

Follow all the instructions for Winter types in the book Color Me A Season, by Bernice Kentner. Your body harmony colors are compatible to stark black, white, grey and navy blue. Consider using your dark colors with bright ones. Black with primary red, yellow and blue are perfect, but Winter Plum or other darkened colors, are too much the same tone as black, and are less interesting. When using these types of colors, wear white or grey as a contrast instead. Because of your hair coloring, black shoes will balance off your entire costume. A good rule to follow is, use one neutral color with one that is not a neutral, or use a complete neutral look, such as black with grey or black with white, etc. Wear your eye coloring hue deeper and more dramatic. Geometric prints, or non-real flower prints, stripes, but mostly solids, add to your striking look. Diamonds and silver are definitely for you.

Brunette or Salt and Pepper Winters (Snowfrost or soft Winter)

Your type is sometimes wrongly placed in the Summer pallet which is blue based, but too light for your skin tone. (Icy pastels in lightest position in your Fan may be worn). You are more in harmony with Winter's blackbrown than black itself. The softer browns and greys are good neutrals for you. Black and white prints are quite nice, as is stark white with bouquet deep colors. You may use some floral prints, but in Winter's colors. Soft, flowing chiffons 7 are glamorous, as are soft materials, angoras or knits. Polka-dots and stripes are nice and also small geometric patterns. Don't use large overpowering designs. Play up your eye coloring fan color, by wearing it as a dress or blouse. Eye coloring is usually mid-tone and you can wear it in that range very well, regardless of how light the color is.

Blonde Winters (Firelight Winter)

In your own way, you are as striking as the Absolute Winter. You will have a Spring appearance no matter how you wear your colors. You are the Winter who can use her light skin tone beige as a suit or basic clothing item. However, white is so fabulous, you probably would not be drawn to the beige. Jewel-tone brights, in purity, should be worn under the face! You will look like cool refreshing ice cream on a hot day by using stark white with pink, yellow, and lighter versions of red-violets. You may achieve a Summer look by wearing your own red, white and blue. Solid color choices do not take away from your look, but you can also borrow Summer or Spring print suggestions when you want to look more soft or animated. Stay in the colors of your Fan. Greys are usually not as becoming, but may be when your hair turns to silver.

Auburn or Redheaded Winters (Sunset Winter)

All the greens and turquoise colors in your Fan are exceptionally good for you. Blues and navy blue are great because they are a direct complement to your body harmony colors in which you look more like Autumn. Solids and prints in plaids, stripes or nature designs (using Winter colors only) are nice for you. Try doing the absolute Winter look, to see if it is more subjective to your feelings. You may be able to eliminate the Autumn look entirely, because the black of Winter says, "Wow!" Overlook the softer colors in the Fan. Use the end colors to about three steps down. If pastels are used, they must have an icy quality to them. Use a bit of white trim on deep pastels in the Fan.

Follow the instructions in this Fan Booklet. Winter has more restrictions on the amount of colors that may be used in Wardrobe planning. Usually one or two colors at a time on an outfit is best. Otherwise it can become too busy and detract from the beauty of you.

Black and white are the very best wardrobe colors that can Notes About Using Your Winter Color Fan be built on. Grey, navy blue, dark brown, and sometimes taupe can also be used for those with a blend. Use only one color from each strip with a Winter neutral.

Make good use of the pastel colors on your Fan when found in a fabric of icy intensity. These also provide more variety of color for you.
